How to Store Your Mattress

how to store a mattress
A good mattress isn’t cheap and how you store it is pivotal for longevity. Whether you’ve spent a few hundred pounds on a solid spring model or pushed the boat out on a premium memory foam or hybrid, it’s the kind of purchase you want to protect. So when life throws a move, a renovation, or a declutter your way and your mattress needs to go into storage, doing it properly really does matter.
Get it wrong and you’re looking at mould, sagging, pest damage, or a mattress that simply won’t sleep the same when it comes back out. Get it right and you’ll pull it out of storage in the same condition it went in. Here’s exactly how to do that.

Why How You Store It Makes Such a Big Difference

Mattresses are deceptively sensitive. The internal structure, whether that’s foam, springs, or a combination of both, can degrade under the wrong conditions. Moisture causes mould. Pressure warps foam. Standing it upright too long can shift the internal components. A little preparation goes a long way towards making sure your mattress comes back out ready to use.

Step 1: Clean It Thoroughly Before It Goes Anywhere

Mattresses accumulate dust, sweat, and allergens over time. Before you wrap anything up, give it a proper clean using a method suitable for the mattress type. Avoid harsh chemicals, and crucially, make sure it is completely dry before you store it. Any residual moisture trapped inside a cover is a fast track to mildew.

Step 2: Use the Right Wrapping

Breathable is the key word here. A fabric mattress bag or a clean sheet works well. What you want to avoid is sealing the mattress in plastic, which traps humidity against the surface and creates exactly the conditions mould loves. Secure the covering with tape, but make sure the tape doesn’t touch the mattress fabric itself.

Step 3: Always Store It Flat

This one catches people out. It feels easier to lean a mattress upright against a wall, but doing so puts long-term stress on the springs and can cause foam layers to shift and deform. Store it flat on a solid, level surface. If you genuinely have no option but to store it upright for a short period, rotate it regularly to distribute any pressure evenly.

Step 4: Protect the Underside

Don’t put the mattress directly on a cold or potentially damp floor. Lay a clean blanket, tarp, or sheet underneath it first. Even better, raise it slightly using pallets or other flat furniture. Floor contact, particularly in a storage setting, is one of the more common causes of damp damage that people don’t think about until it’s too late.

Step 5: Keep the Top Clear

Never stack boxes or other items on top of a stored mattress. It might seem like a sensible use of space, but the pressure compresses the internal materials, particularly in memory foam and hybrid designs, and that compression can become permanent. Your mattress needs to be left alone up top.

Step 6: Choose the Right Storage Unit

The environment matters enormously. A dry, well-ventilated unit with stable temperature conditions is ideal for long-term mattress storage. You want somewhere that won’t get damp, won’t see dramatic temperature swings, and is kept clean. Our units are maintained to exactly these standards, making them a solid choice whether you’re storing a mattress for a few weeks or several months or even years.

Step 7: Transport It Carefully

Moving a mattress solo is a struggle at the best of times. Get someone to help. Use an enclosed vehicle like a van or trailer rather than strapping it to a roof rack, where it’s exposed to rain, wind, and road grime. Keep it covered and dry throughout the journey.

Step 8: Check In on It During Long-Term Storage

If your mattress is going to be stored for an extended period, don’t just forget about it. Check on it periodically for any signs of damp, pests, or damage to the covering. If the wrapping gets torn or compromised, replace or reinforce it. When you get the chance, let it air out for a bit to keep it fresh.

Step 9: Unpack It Gently

When it’s time to bring it back out, take your time. Dragging a mattress across floors or catching it on doorframes damages the edges and can tear the fabric. Handle it with the same care going out as you would coming in.

Step 10: Let It Breathe Before Use

Once it’s unpacked, give it a few hours to air out before putting sheets on it. A quick vacuum or wipe-down of the surface is a nice finishing touch before you make the bed up. Memory foam in particular benefits from a bit of time to fully expand and settle after being stored.
